Childcare and Education News December 2007
- The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a report claiming that some young people feel trapped by their local area. The report says that training places or jobs may not be viewed as accessible by some young people if they force people into taking more than one bus. The report adds that while some young people do not allow geography to limit their aspirations, others are ‘trapped by space’. For more details see http://www.jrf.org.uk/
- The Princes Trust has launched its Community Cash Awards. £5000 is available to young people 14-25 years old in disadvantaged areas. The grants will be given to projects which will benefit their community. For more details see The Princes Trust Fund on our funding database.
- Research by charity The Frank Buttle Trust has found that children living in poverty are “keenly aware” of their parents’ circumstances. The co-author of the report said “for many of the families in this study, poverty means going without basics, such as a cooked meal each day for adults and toys for children”. The report claims that children in deprived areas also have to cope with a violent local culture, including gangs and weapons in schools.
